Old Victory House, Portsmouth

Stayed here for 2 nights during a little weekend getaway with my husband. I booked through Booking.com so got a really good deal.

This place is very basic as it is just a room with a bathroom. We met someone else while we were there and he lives there so I think they must do special rates for workmen and students.

To check-in, you need to go to the Keppel's Head Hotel which is only a few minutes walk away from the house. If you have a car, you will need to make sure you get a parking permit from the hotel so you can park outside the house. It's only £3 for 24 hours so its super cheap. If you aren't able to get a parking permit, there is a car park right around the corner from the house which is park and display.

We were in room 3 on the first floor, it is a good size, you aren't crammed in at all, plenty of room to move around, even if there is 2 of you in the room. Our room was a slightly strange shape, I think that it was a large room that had the bathroom added at a later date because it is in a kind of L shape with the TV in a corner.

Ignore the bottle of beer on the bedside table in the picture, that was ours.

The bed was super comfy, I haven't had a really good nights sleep in a hotel in ages. If it hadn't been for our neighbours on the floor above us having a party on the Saturday night and the cargo train going past at silly o'clock in the morning, I honestly think I would have slept all the way through both nights. I usually take my own pillow as I sometimes find hotel pillows a bit disappointing, but the ones we had supplied on the bed were really nice, I didn't need mine at all. The bed is a little bit too close to the radiator, it made us really hot when we were in bed so we had to turn it off.

It had a lovely bay window with a chair, it was great to sit there in the morning with the light coming in and you had a great view of the Spinnaker Tower. If I had the curtains open at night, I had the perfect view of it laying in bed. The towel is lit up at night, it was pink when we were there but when I had a look online, it says that it can be different colours depending on the day and you can even pay to have it whatever colour you want it to be.

The wardrobe is small with only 2 hangers and one of those was broken. One of the doors was a mirror and there was drawers inside the wardrobe. Perfect size for a short stay of a few days but not for longer, especially if there is 2 of you.

The bathroom was a bit on the small size but that could just be because we are both big people. We both found it a bit difficult to sit on the toilet in a comfortable position as it is in a funny place but everything works fine. The shower is super easy to use and had really good pressure.

The Old Victory House is only a few minutes walk from the Historic Dockyard so if you are looking for somewhere to stay that is perfectly located for the dockyard, this is the place to stay. Other than the dockyard, it is really close to the ferry port and the bus station so there are plenty of ways to get around.

If you decide to have breakfast, you will need to go to the Keppel Head Hotel each morning where you can have a full English, yogurt, fruit, cereals and toast. They have hot and cold drinks available like tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices. On our last day, we drove down to the hotel in our car and parked in the hotel car park which was fine as we were only there for breakfast.

I will gladly stay here again as it is in such a brilliant location and that bed seriously was so comfortable.
